Building a 3G 5 a side MUGA Pitch in Southampton

A school in Southampton recently approached us to build a 3G 5 a side MUGA pitch which could be used by their students during PE lessons and in after school sports clubs for football and other activities. The school wanted a new state of the art sports facility in synthetic grass surfacing to provide natural performance qualities for football and other activities.

Building a 3G 5 a side MUGA

To begin the process of building a 3G 5 a side MUGA facility for the school, we first had to prepare the existing area which was an unusable grassy surface. We prepared the ground by carrying out excavation to the required depth for the construction and installation of the new 3G surfacing. Because the final 3G pitch specification is porous and allows water to drain through it, the next stage was to install a drainage system within the groundworks so that rain water could be carried away from the area. The next stage of building a 3G 5 a side MUGA was to install a specialist permeable stone sub base to give the pitch a stable foundation which would be durable and long lasting. This layer of angular stones is specifically designed for use with sports surfaces as it is strong and allows water to drain through it easily. These stones had to be compacted down to ensure that the sub base was even and stable before the surfacing was installed.

We then had to put down the synthetic 3G carpet onto the prepared sub base, the turf was rolled out in multiple layers and then joined together at the edges and the seams with a specialised sports pitch glue. Once the 3G surfacing had been installed, a sand and rubber infill layer was then spread throughout the artificial fibres to give the right performance qualities and to stabilise the pitch. The school also chose to have sports facility fencing installed to keep the 5 a side pitch safe at all times and to prevent any equipment from getting lost.

When the final construction works had been completed, the pupils and staff at the school were left with a brand new top quality football facility which can be utilised during school and in extra curricular clubs. The versatility and durability of the surface also means that it can be used by other clubs and schools to help create additional revenue.
