Polymeric surfacing is all the rage for multi use games areas because it has many advantages with regards to slip resistance and playing characteristics being met. Polymeric surfacing is commonly used for netball courts, tennis courts and general multi use purposes. There are two types of polymeric surfacing being a type 3 MUGA surface and type 4 MUGA surface that both are constructed in different specifications to meet different playing characteristics. The type 3 MUGA surface and type 4 MUGA surface are detailed below :
Type 3 MUGA surface is a polymeric surfacing that consists of a 9mm depth SBR base course shockpad which then has a 3mm spray applied EPDM wearing course with binder and anti slip properties to meet the slip resistance of TRRL 75 which is primarily used for netball. The type 3 MUGA surface specification is also commonly used for athletics tracks, long jump run ups and triple jumps because the EPDM spray coat anti slip properties on this polymeric surfacing meet Sport England standards.
Type 4 MUGA surface is a polymeric surfacing that consists of a 12-15mm depth EPDM wearing course (1-4mm EPDM rubber granule), mixed with a polyurethane resin binder. The primary sports is football & basketball and the anti slip resistance needed to be met is TRRL 55. The spray coat finish on this polymeric surface is generally used on most multi use games areas and also commonly used for golf pathways.
Demarcation can be made utilising different colours or line marking. The different colours can be applied with the application of the anti slip paint and these come in a selection of colours with red and green being the standard range.
